Michelle and Stephen could have met many times before they actually did, having unknowingly attended the same college and having had mutual friends that tried (but failed) to set them up. So when they did meet, it didn’t take them long to know they were meant to last. Fast forward five years and they’re engaged, looking all over the world for a wedding venue. They found the perfect place right near their home, practically in their backyard, Wave Hill.
A public garden and former estate overlooking the Hudson River, Wave Hill took my breath away the first time I stepped onto the great lawn.—Michelle
As avid lovers of both food and music, both aspects were incredibly important to the couple in designing their wedding day. They walked down the aisle to songs that had meaning to them, especially Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen for Stephen and She’s Got a Way by Billy Joel for Michelle, played flawlessly by a quartet from Curtis Music. The couple exchanged vows with the sun setting behind them on a beautiful fall day. After the ceremony, guests were escorted along a lantern-lined path to the Wave Hill House terrace for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres that included coconut shrimp, antipasto skewers, and lobster rolls from Great Performances.
The mansion at Wave Hill is a somewhat small venue, which inherently gave the night an intimate feeling. Rectangular tables topped with tons of candles and low free-flowing white and green flower arrangements surrounded the dance floor, and made the room feel like a romantic and lush dinner party. When guests took a break from dancing, they filled out personalized Madlibs and dined on heirloom tomato and burrata salad, braised short ribs, and pasta with mushroom sauce. For dessert guests were treated to a 4-tiered cake from Momofuku Milk Bar, and for some late night energy, mini grilled cheese sandwiches, french fry cones, black and white milkshakes, and ice cream sandwiches were passed around the dance floor.
We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect wedding weekend surrounded by the people who mean the most to us. The setting, the food, the music, the atmosphere were more than we ever imagined they could be.—Michelle
