HOW with a few party must-haves your office conference room can become party central
If a colleague is getting hitched, even if she (or he) isn’t inviting co-workers to the wedding, there’s no reason you can’t celebrate their engagement with a bridal shower at the office. While you could go the easy route and pick up a box of Dunkin’ Donuts and coffee on your way in one morning, it would be much more festive, and delicious, to plan a more formal bridal shower.
Not sure how to host a bridal shower at work? We enlisted the help of Deborah Lloyd, President and Chief Creative Officer of kate spade new york, and author of the new book, All in Good Taste, for her hostess tips to ensure your party goes off without a hitch!
First things first: Choosing a date and time. Pick a time a few weeks before the big day in case the bride or groom have to run out unexpectedly to deal with pressing wedding matters, but opt for a late afternoon celebration, especially if champagne will be served. “If there’s a concern about disrupting office hours, postpone to Friday afternoon for a fun entrée into weekend,” advises Deborah.

The Guest List
When planning the guest list for an office bridal shower invite the team and department the bride-to-be works with, or if the company is small consider inviting everyone to the celebration. “Celebrating a colleague’s milestone is a special occasion where more is more,” Deborah tells Twirl New York. “Invite all and together shower the soon-to be bride with bubbly and confetti.”
Spread the news about the upcoming bridal shower with an invite, and we don’t mean the Microsoft Outlook kind. Ask a graphic designer colleague if she can create something, or use an e-service such as Evite or Paperless Post. The Pop Fizz Clink! design shown here by kate spade new york for Paperless Post.
Although you may not be able to redecorate the office conference room too much, adding festive décor is a must. Make a big impact with one or two things, like oversized balloons, colorful confetti and streamers or fans. To help make decorating easier pick a color palette to work within so you can narrow down your options for paper plates, napkins, cups, and other details such as the icing on cupcakes! 34” Gold Letter Party Balloons, $6, available at urbanoutfitters.com.
Keep things simple and narrow your food and beverage menu to two to four items. “The menu will of course depend on the time of day, but champagne is a must and we love the idea of a menu tailored to the guest of honor—whether her favorite treat is banana pudding, croissants, or tacos,” says Deborah. No matter what the main course is, a selection of sweet treats should make it on to the menu. Deborah recommends macarons, and we quite agree. They are the new cupcake. But some other yummy ideas are a cake, cookies, mini or full-sized cupcakes or doughnuts. Choose a flavor the bride likes and see if you can order them in the bridal shower or wedding’s color palette. We found these airbrushed macarons downtown at bisous, ciao Macarons. Their menu has a wide variety of flavors, including seasonal specials, and they can customize the macaroons with a design or words of your choice. Photo via @adriennelstew.
Set the mood with the right playlist. If there’s a DJ-wannabe on the team ask her to put something together, and see if anyone can set up a speaker in the party room. Or you can log in to someone’s Spotify, Pandora or Google Play Music account. Deborah suggests to start with a little jazz, “Miles Davis, Nina Simone, Sade, and a little disco, always gets the party moving.” Some other fun shower-y songs you may want to add to the list: Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours by Stevie Wonder, Crazy Love by Van Morrison and Lovely Day by Bill Withers. As customary with any bridal shower the guests should bring a gift, but at an office bridal shower there are a few different gifting options. Either everyone can chip in and buy one item for the couple, each person can decide individually if they would like to bring a gift, or as a group you can decided not to purchase anything. “Gift giving in the office requires finesse and should be personalized,” advises Deborah. “We tend to gift as a group. Should the coworker be a close friend, you can always gift on the side.” And as for what to gift, the couple’s wedding registry is a good starting off point, but if nothing on that list feels right then find an item you think the bride or the couple will enjoy.
