CHELLISE MICHAEL PHOTOGRAPHY
Hire these “Rising Stars” for creative and unconventional wedding photos
The couples who book Chellise Michael Photography are unconventional, have a deep admiration for photography, and are seeking out relaxed, honest, and creative wedding photos that are the complete opposite of their parents’ wedding photos. “A lot of our couples choose us because, as they tell us, we take photos that don’t look like wedding photos,” co-owner Chellise Michael tells Twirl New York.
Named one of the Top 3 Wedding Photographers Doing Things Differently by Rangefinder Magazine, and listed as one of the magazine’s 30 Rising Stars of Wedding Photography in 2015, the company has gained a following among couples who work in the arts, as well as those who have an interest in photography. “Most of our clients are involved with art and photography as a career or hobby,” she adds.
Opened in 2007, and based in New York, they have six lead photographers who shoot together in teams. Once you book your wedding with them, the company gifts a complimentary engagement shoot. “Having this session breaks the ice and builds the foundation with creating beautiful images together,” says co-owner Michael Busse. “We start in their home where they are most comfortable and venture out from there, photographing them in their own neighborhood, where they dwell the most together.
Working with 35mm film, digital cameras, and sometimes a Polaroid, they process each image in a way that emulates film and reflects that slightly grainy, not overly saturated or heavily edited look. You’ll find that they have a minimalist eye and search for lines and texture when capturing engagement photos, portraits and the special moments on the wedding day. “We refuse to make our couples jump in the air or pose unnaturally,” Michael explains. We don’t use props. We want to create real photos of people as they are on their wedding day, surrounded by the ones they love the most, and tell their story beautifully in pictures.”
“Our photographers forge a genuine connection with each couple, and that’s what makes our images what they are.” — Chellise Michael.
Is the name Chellise Michael ringing a bell? It might because their weddings have been published in BRIDES, Martha Stewart Weddings, the knot, New York Magazine Weddings, as well as Style Me Pretty and other wedding blogs. We asked them to shoot an engagement party in 2015, you can see Lizzie and Peter’s engagement party pics, here. Their 6-person photo teams are priced based on experience, and start at $3,500. Individual prints and albums are a la carte. Couples can expect 800 to 1000 final, edited wedding images on their 3-month anniversary in a gallery that they can then share with friends and family.
