WHAT Tops Martha Stewart Weddings and Harper Bazaar’s best wedding photog lists
WHERE Brooklyn-based, but shoots worldwide
WHY because photojournalistic pictures can convey the romance of the day
Probably one of the most often seen photo bylines in Martha Stewart Weddings, Charlotte Jenks Lewis is widely recognized as a wonderful wedding photographer. Wonderful because her work is beautiful, and she’s just so lovely to have around you on your wedding day. Her relaxed style and unobtrusive presence create a calming effect on the bride, groom and those around them.
With a real passion for what she does, Charlotte’s goal on your wedding day is to capture meaningful moments as well as the beauty in the details. “It’s really rewarding to shoot weddings,” she tells Twirl New York, “because you’re coasting on the happiest day in people’s lives and able to give them something from it that’s lasting and that they really enjoy.”
While she would consider herself a photojournalist, telling the narrative of the day from getting ready to the getaway, she describes her work as romantic, intimate and playful, which is apparent in her work. In the dreamy images she captured at Tiler Peck and Robert Fairchild’s wedding in June 2014 (you can see the complete wedding at marthastewartweddings.com) you can feel the love between the couple and the happiness that surrounds them.
Working with Charlotte is a collaborative effort. She thinks about the color palette of the day, the actions and emotions, and how they will unfold. Knowing that many of her couples like the look of film she captures weddings in both film and digital formats using a mix of modern and antique cameras.
I think it’s important to get the bride with her mom at the beginning of the day. People always put those shots in their album.—Charlotte Jenks Lewis
To better get to know the couple, and help them get more relaxed in front of the camera, Charlotte always includes an engagement shoot in her packages. And if there isn’t an opportunity to meet beforehand, a Skype or phone call is scheduled. “You spend a big chunk of the day with the photographer, so you should be sure you feel comfortable with them and like them,” she adds.
Charlotte’s real weddings have been featured in Martha Stewart Weddings, Style Me Pretty, Town & Country, the knot, Grey Likes Weddings and 100 Layer Cake. In 2014 Martha Stewart Weddings named her one of the best photographers in the world, and in 2016 Harper’s Bazaar placed her on their list of the world’s best photogs.
Charlotte only shoots 15 to 20 weddings per year, and her prices start at $6,700.
